Interstate Removals at Short Notice

An interstate move takes longer than the map suggests: drivers must rest, and some states check household goods at the border.

Why an interstate truck cannot drive straight through

Under the Heavy Vehicle National Law's standard hours, a solo driver may work at most 12 hours in any 24 and must take 7 continuous hours of stationary rest (National Heavy Vehicle Regulator). These fatigue rules apply to vehicles over 12 tonnes, so a smaller removal truck may be outside them (NHVR). The national law applies in the ACT, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria, but not in Western Australia or the Northern Territory (NHVR), and WA runs its own fatigue rules (NHVR). Ask the removalist for a realistic delivery window, not just a pick-up date.

States that check your household goods

Tasmania. Anyone moving there permanently lodges a personal effects declaration, the removalist or self-move version, before the goods arrive (Biosecurity Tasmania). Garden tools, pots and mowers must be washed free of soil and seeds.

Western Australia. People moving to WA complete a declaration for the movement of personal goods with their removalist, and delays and inspection fees may apply. Road checkpoints at Eucla and Kununurra run 24 hours (DPIRD).

Queensland. Moving soil, potted plants or anything that has touched the ground out of a fire ant zone needs a biosecurity permit (Business Queensland).

Booking an interstate move quickly

Tell us both towns and states, when you need to be out and when you need the goods. Tell us when you need to move. We'll try to find a removalist who can help at short notice. Get a written quote that names the pick-up and delivery dates, as NSW Fair Trading advises (NSW Fair Trading). See emergency moves. Then request a quote.

Interstate move questions

How long does an interstate move take?

It depends on the distance and the truck. Drivers of heavier trucks must rest under the fatigue rules, so ask the removalist for a delivery window in writing.

What can I not take to Tasmania?

Fresh fruit and vegetables cannot be brought in, and garden gear must be washed clean. Check Biosecurity Tasmania's page before you pack.

Do I need paperwork to move to Western Australia?

Yes, a declaration for the movement of personal goods into WA, completed with your removalist. Check DPIRD's page for the current form.
