What counts as a small move

Moving out of a studio or a one-bedroom flat, sending a few rooms of furniture to a new place, or moving a single heavy item such as a fridge, couch or piano. In some inner suburbs small homes are common: in South Yarra homes averaged 1.9 bedrooms at the 2021 Census and 30.2% had one bedroom.

What to ask about price

On a short job the terms matter more than the rate. Ask whether there is a minimum charge, how travel time is counted and whether the price is a flat fee or by the hour, with the extra charges that apply if the job runs over (Victorian Government). For a single item, give its measurements and weight if you know them, and the narrowest doorway or staircase at both ends.

Vans and loading zones

A small move often uses a van rather than a truck. Under Victoria's road rules a vehicle of 4.5 tonnes gross vehicle mass or less is not a truck, so a van may use a loading zone only if it is a registered goods vehicle built mainly for carrying loads, and for 30 minutes unless the sign shows another time (rule 179, Road Safety Road Rules 2017). Some council parking permits cover vans but not trucks, such as Darebin's service permit for Northcote. Then request a free quote.

Emergency requests are passed on first. A smaller job is easier to fit in at short notice than a full house, so say exactly what is moving.
